Responsible Travel

Planet

Transport and energy

This tour includes domestic flights from Addis Ababa to Semera and from Mekelle to Addis Ababa, as well as long journeys in a fuel-powered 4x4 vehicle. These are significant parts of the trip’s environmental impact. We tell travelers about the route and transport before booking and do not describe the vacation as carbon neutral or environmentally friendly.

The vehicle arrangement depends on the number of travelers and whether the departure is private or shared. Where a group shares a 4x4, several guests travel in one vehicle; a private departure has transport arranged for its own party. Drivers are asked to avoid unnecessary engine idling and to use permitted roads and tracks, subject to local conditions and the instructions of the expedition team.

The Hamed Ela overnight stay uses simple desert camping facilities. We explain the camp arrangements before departure, including what water and washing facilities are available. Hotels in Addis Ababa, Mekelle and Hawzen are confirmed for each booking; we do not describe a property as environmentally friendly based on a single feature.

Dallol, salt flats and desert visits

Dallol’s hydrothermal formations, acidic pools and salt surfaces require care. Travelers visit with a local guide and the required escort. We ask guests to follow the team’s route, keep a safe distance from pools and unstable ground, and leave mineral formations undisturbed. Access to individual sites depends on safety instructions and local operating conditions.

At Lake Karum, the salt flats and other stops, we ask guests to take their litter with them and avoid leaving plastic or other waste at viewpoints and campsites. We encourage travelers to bring a reusable bottle, while explaining that safe refill options are limited in the desert. Drinking water arrangements are confirmed before the trip.

Gheralta landscape and church visits

On the approach to Abuna Yemata Guh or an alternative church, we ask travelers to remain on the route shown by local guides. Visitors should leave rocks, plants and other features in place and carry out anything they bring onto the trail.

The rock-hewn churches are living religious places as well as historic sites. Guides explain the rules for entry, dress and photography. We ask guests to follow the instructions of church custodians and avoid touching paintings and other fragile features.

People

Local guides and paid work

The Danakil section uses an expedition team that includes local Afar guides and the staff required for transport, camping and escorted visits. In Tigray, local guides assist with visits to the rock-hewn churches and explain their history and religious significance. The team size and roles depend on the group, route and requirements for that departure.

The tour also purchases services from hotels, restaurants, drivers and other providers along the route. We confirm these arrangements for each booking rather than claiming that a fixed number of people benefit from every tour.

Visits to communities and working areas

The journey passes Afar settlements and may include a visit to a salt-mining area when access and local conditions permit. Guides explain where visitors may go and whether photography is welcome. We ask travelers to request permission before photographing workers, residents or homes, and to respect a refusal.

In Addis Ababa, a market visit or coffee ceremony is arranged with local hosts or guides when time allows. Guests who want to buy crafts or other products are encouraged to purchase directly from sellers or makers where possible. Purchases and contributions during visits are voluntary unless a particular fee is clearly stated in the booking details.

Accessibility and individual needs

This is a physically demanding tour. The Danakil Depression involves extreme heat, long drives, basic camping and limited access to medical facilities. Walking at Dallol requires care around uneven ground and hazardous geothermal features.

Abuna Yemata Guh requires a challenging ascent with exposed rock and narrow cliffside sections. Local guides can assist, but the climb will not be suitable for everyone, particularly travelers uncomfortable with heights. We discuss the demands of the climb before booking. Where the schedule and local conditions permit, we can plan a visit to a different Tigray church for travelers who do not wish to make the ascent.

Please tell us about mobility, dietary, hearing, vision or other needs before confirming the trip. We can then explain the proposed route, accommodation and activities, and discuss what adjustments are available.
