CARBON REDUCTION

Several of the lodges on this route generate their own power rather than draw from generators. Murchison River Lodge is powered entirely by on-site solar panels, and Katara Lodge runs both its lighting and its hot water from solar, backed up by low-energy LED bulbs throughout. Ishasha Wilderness Camp and Buhoma Lodge, run by the same operator, Uganda Exclusive Camps, use predominantly solar power too, and heat water using sawmill waste rather than firewood, specifically to avoid pressure on indigenous trees. The trip itself is built around walking and boat travel wherever the landscape allows it: chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, a hike in the Rwenzori foothills, gorilla trekking in Bwindi and a walking safari in Lake Mburo cover four full days on foot rather than by vehicle.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The trip price includes national park permits and fees at every park visited, from Murchison Falls to the Bwindi gorilla permit itself, so a meaningful share of what's paid goes directly to Uganda Wildlife Authority conservation funding rather than being an optional add-on. Day two calls at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, run by Rhino Fund Uganda, which reintroduced white rhino to the country in 2006 after the species was wiped out by poaching in the 1980s; dozens have since been born there, with surplus animals translocated to Ajai Wildlife Reserve and Kidepo Valley National Park to rebuild wild populations elsewhere. In Ishasha, the same tree-climbing lions this itinerary goes looking for on days ten and eleven are the subject of an ongoing Large Carnivore Monitoring Project tracking the sector's population. Katara Lodge, meanwhile, harvests its own rainwater, fits ultra-low-flush toilets throughout and uses a saltwater rather than a chlorinated pool.

LOCAL ECONOMY
Murchison River Lodge and Rwakobo Rock Lodge are both independently, locally run rather than international-chain properties; Murchison River Lodge describes itself as family-run, with staff who tend to stay for years and move between roles rather than turn over quickly. Katara Lodge's cultural programme includes visits to the Katara Women's Group and time with the local Banyaruguru community, and Ishasha Wilderness Camp's operator runs an Ishasha Community Uplift Group offering agricultural training, savings schemes and a market for local crafts. Beyond the lodges themselves, the $10 of every Bwindi gorilla permit that Uganda Wildlife Authority shares with border communities, and the wider 20% of national park revenue returned to sub-counties around every park on this route, funds village-level projects, from school buildings to water tanks, in the communities this itinerary passes through.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Uganda Exclusive Camps, which runs Ishasha Wilderness Camp and Buhoma Lodge, states that more than 95% of its operations are staffed by Ugandans, with first hiring priority given to people from the communities immediately around each property. The same operator supports the Batwa Empowerment Village, giving the Batwa, displaced from Bwindi's forest when it became a national park, an income through cultural tourism, and Ride 4 a Woman, which works with women in the area facing poverty, HIV and domestic violence.
