CARBON REDUCTION

Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, run by Nkuringo Eco Collection, draws part of its electricity from solar power, with generators kept only as backup, and filters its own drinking water on site with refill stations for reusable bottles rather than supplying bottled water. The trip is also built around two full days on foot: the standard gorilla trek and the following day's habituation experience, which alone can involve up to ten hours of trekking, well beyond the token walk some itineraries offer.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

The trip price includes both gorilla trekking permits and park and guide fees, so a direct share of what's paid funds Uganda Wildlife Authority's conservation work in Bwindi rather than being optional. Of that, $10 of every gorilla permit is shared directly with the communities bordering the park under UWA's revenue-sharing policy. The habituation day itself, Day 4, follows a gorilla family still in the process of becoming used to human visitors rather than a long-established group, a stage that depends on the same rangers and researchers who monitor the wider population. Nkuringo Eco Collection's Gorilla Junction Foundation, funded by a $10-per-guest-per-night contribution built into every stay, also puts money into tree planting and habitat restoration work around Bwindi.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Nkuringo Eco Collection recruits around 90% of its staff across its lodges, including Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, from western Uganda. The $10-per-guest-per-night contribution built into every stay funds the Gorilla Junction Foundation's Robert Brierley Community Center, which runs tailoring, craft-making and enterprise-support schemes for women and young people near the lodge. In Entebbe, Karibu Guesthouse grows produce in its own organic garden and buys fresh vegetables, fish and meat at the local market daily rather than through a supplier. Beyond the properties themselves, the wider 20% of national park revenue that Uganda Wildlife Authority returns to sub-counties around Bwindi, on top of the gorilla permit share noted above, funds village-level projects such as schools and water tanks in the communities this itinerary touches.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Around 90% of Nkuringo Eco Collection's staff, across the lodges it runs including Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge, are recruited from western Uganda. The Gorilla Junction Foundation it funds is explicitly aimed at women and young people, offering skills development and enterprise support rather than general community giving.
