Best places to go on vacation in June 2023

June is the sweet spot when it comes to summer vacations. There’s plenty of good weather in Europe, but the peak season crush has yet to begin. In Southern Europe, take to the waters with a small ship cruise on the Aegean or around the Croatian coastline, or hike in the Spanish mountains before the temperatures get truly scorching. Prefer things a little cooler? Further north, it’s prime time for rail and boating vacations in Scotland or hikes through Finland’s national parks.
June weather is dry and sunny across much of the globe, whether you want to take to the waters of the Aegean or search for the Big Five across the Namibian plains.
For a dose of adventure on the other side of the world, the best places to go in June include Malaysian Borneo, where it’s the perfect time to see orangutans, or Southern Africa, where the dry season brings a host of big beasts to drink at the watering holes of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. For something really adventurous, follow the Silk Road on an extended small group tour.

June vacation activities

Activity vacations

If you like your vacations action packed rather than super chilled, then June brings a raft of ideas for activity vacations. You could opt for self guided cycling in Portugal, try something new every day with a multi activity break in Wales, or, for something more offbeat, try a foraging and food vacation in Sweden or salsa dancing in Cuba.

Railway vacations

Rail vacations kick into gear as the weather gets warmer and the days longer, with Scotland a popular choice – not only do you get spectacular Highland views from your window, it’s perfect walking weather when you do get off the train. For a classic European rail vacation with a twist, the Balkans is what you’re looking for.

Small ship cruises

Small ship cruises or sailing vacations in Croatia or Greece really take off in June. The weather is balmy and the waters are clear, but the summer vacations crowds have yet to arrive. If you prefer your cruises with a side of changeable weather, then board a traditional ketch boat in the Outer Hebrides for sailing and marine wildlife watching. Or for a real adventure, head for the Arctic – it’s not the right time for the Northern Lights but the days are long and bright and the conditions just right for seeing large icebergs and wildlife.

Walking

In Southern Europe things are hotting up nicely – not so much as to make things really sweaty, but enough for you to break up the day with a dip in a lake or in the sea. Take it easy by mixing gentle hikes with another activity such as walking and wildlife watching in the Pyrenees, walking and language lessons in the Picos de Europa, or walking and painting in Crete. Or, for something more hardcore, try trekking in Poland’s High Tatras.

Wildlife watching

It’s peak safari season in Namibia and Botswana. The rains have gone, and the plains are drying up, so animals cluster around the watering holes. Temperatures are comfortable – mid to high 20°Cs, though you’ll need a jumper for early morning drives. It’s also dry season in Borneo, so this is the time to head into the wild to see orangutans with an expert guide and conservationist, either on foot or by boat.
