Czechia map & highlights
Czechia is a country of roughly two halves: it’s split between the historic regions of Moravia and little Silesia in the east – and Bohemia in the west. Prague, the capital, is located in Bohemia, as is the popular spa town of Karlovy Vary and Bohemian Paradise, a protected landscape area. The second city, Brno, is in Moravia, as is the Mutenice Wine Region. The train network makes getting around easy: it’s just two and a half hours from Prague to Brno, and four hours from Prague to Vienna. It’s also easy to get from Czechia to other countries in Central Europe.

Prague
1. Prague
From Baroque confections to dancing houses, Prague’s architecture is irresistibly pretty. It’s one of the best cities in Europe to see on foot, but it’s also lovely to see from a boat’s-eye view on the River Vltava, which is crossed by the city’s famous Charles Bridge. Simply stroll around, crossing vast squares, climbing towers, and checking out one of the many concerts – invariably, there will be some classical music on offer.
Bohemian Paradise
2. Bohemian Paradise
The aptly-named Bohemian Paradise is a UNESCO Global Geopark. While its rock formations – including the towering Prachov Rocks – are impressive even to non-geologists, sandstone pillars are just part of what makes this park interesting. There are multiple castles and castle ruins in the area, including the ruins of Trosky Castle, balanced precariously on two volcanic plugs. It’s a great place for walking, cycling and, naturally, rock climbing.
Brno
3. Brno
The provincial capital of Moravia and second-largest city in Czechia, Brno is far less visited than Prague. Yet it’s a cultural hub, a lively university city (there are 12 institutions here) with museums and galleries, public sculptures and frequent festivals. And yes, of course, it has castles too – three of them. Delve below to see a World War II bunker, an atomic bomb shelter, a crypt, an ossuary and even a labyrinth under the vegetable market.
Cesky Krumlov
4. Cesky Krumlov
Tourists flock to UNESCO-listed Cesky Krumlov, especially in summer, as it’s one of the most beautiful places in the country. The tightly packed Baroque buildings with their terracotta roofs give the town a fairy-tale air – as does the country’s second largest castle, which towers above it. Cesky Krumlov is built into a bend in the Vltava River, which winds onward to Prague. Rafting is a popular activity from the town.
Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape
5. Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape
What exactly is a cultural landscape? In the south of Moravia, between the towns of Lednice and Valtice, you’ll find an area that resembles a massive parkland: there are castles, pavilions, follies, temples and chapels spread between gardens. The area was developed in the 19th century by the House of Liechtenstein as a ‘model estate’. Today, it’s a pleasant place to walk, cycle and channel your inner duke.
South Moravia
6. South Moravia
Welcome to wine country: warm climes and fertile soil have made this region home to millions of vines. Explore medieval towns like Znojmo and Mikulov, where you’ll find plenty of places offering a glass of wine produced within walking distance of your table, alongside locally produced, hearty Czech fare. South Moravia’s wine heritage lost its way under Soviet rule but has since experienced a revival.
