PILATES HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN

If you're bored of beach vacations on the Costa Blanca but you just can't resist the allure of sunshine and tapas, why not opt for a week away that will leave you relaxed and refreshed rather than sunburned and bleary eyed? Pilates vacations in Spain are perfect for anyone looking to exercise in a purpose built retreat surrounded by mountain trails, olive groves and Mediterranean sunsets. Yoga, core exercises and circuit training on the beach are just some of the exercises that complement Pilates with daily meditation, hiking and healthy eating also included within this holistic programme.

WHY GO ON A PILATES HOLIDAY IN SPAIN?

Pilates is one of the best ways to strengthen core muscles and improve posture under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Sunshine, mountain air and sea breezes all increase feelings of positivity and wellbeing which is why practising Pilates in Spain is such a tempting prospect. What you eat is also a massive part of a Pilates programme. Retreat breakfasts are the best, with fruit, cereal, yoghurt, fresh tortilla, juices, homemade bread, and a selection of local cheeses and cold cuts creating a tantalising tapas to set you up for the day. Healthy and nutritious vegetarian and vegan dishes are the norm with fish and white meat also offered on occasions. Authentic local dishes, a daily exercise programme and Spanish sunshine, make the most amazing Mediterranean ménage à trois.
Nutritious meals are served on a full board basis to allow energy to radiate from inside and out. You’ll eat healthily without feeling hungry.

PILATES PRACTICALITIES

Spain's Costa Blanca meanders along the Mediterranean for more than 200km, offering visitors a variety of locations ranging from big and brash Benidorm to whitewashed and authentic Altea. The northern section of the Costa Blanca, from Alicante upwards, has a wonderfully mild microclimate, thanks to the protective presence of la Muntanya d’Alacant – the Alicante Mountains. Winter warmth and scorching summers have long attracted sun worshippers to these beaches. However, if you know where to look, you'll also find purpose-built retreats offering an oasis of calm alongside a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, within easy reach of Alicante airport.
This region provides Pilates practitioners with the perfect opportunity to escape into a world of therapeutic workshops, wellness spas and daily fitness classes. Swimming pools, spacious guest bedrooms and sun terraces allow exercise and luxury to be whispered in the same breath. Surrounding foothills are ideal for exploring on foot or by bike, and retreat guests are invited to join guided tours to discover sections of Spain rarely seen by tourists flocking to the coast.

WHO GOES ON PILATES HOLIDAYS IN SPAIN?

Pilates retreats in Spain are limited to a maximum of 16 guests. Solo travelers are welcome and can enjoy their own double room at no additional cost, usually with an en suite bathroom. Although some level of fitness and understanding of Pilates and yoga is beneficial, it's not essential. Often Pilates can be practised in conjunction with other exercises and therapies to combat back pain, mobility and posture problems. Instructors will tailor 90-minute sessions to suit different levels of flexibility as well as holding one-to-one classes for those looking for a deeper and more intense experience.

Spanish cooking classes, pampering therapies, meditation workshops and guided walks in the surrounding countryside allow guests to relax and revive at their own pace as well as making friends and socialising around the pool or at communal meal times. From stressed out parents and business leaders to anyone just looking to make the most of a week in the sunshine in the healthiest way possible, a Pilates vacation provides not only a unique perspective of Spain but also an opportunity to discover a side to yourself that you'd long forgotten.

WHAT'S THE BEST TIME FOR A PILATES HOLIDAY IN SPAIN?

Thanks to Alicante’s mild climate it's possible to attend a wellness retreat at any point throughout the year apart from the scorching summer season; July and August are off limits. May and October are often considered the most pleasant months. Temperatures are warm but not too hot with plenty of sunshine allowing for afternoons by the pool as well as comfortable conditions for walking and cycling in the mountains. As Pilates is taught as part of a holistic programme, a retreat may specify certain dates that are more focused Pilates than others, so do inquire before you book.
