There may well be an awful lot of sand in Namibia - a country characterised by two vast deserts.

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

You start off your journey being met by an experienced guide who will explain to you the in’s and out’s of traveling in Namibia. You will be fully briefed on what to expect, and guided in how to minimize your footprint within the environment (minimising water waste, avoid littering and not to interfere with the animals).

This trip is a very independent one and the size of the footprint is controlled by the traveler. Exploring the national parks (which are state owned) and staying in the rest camps creates revenue that is automatically put back into the conservation and protection of the environment. The national parks work in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and tourism which ensure that the environment is protected.

This trip also explores the Africat Foundation which was started to create awareness and educate the local farmers on how to live with the big cats of Namibia. Research here plays a fundamental part in the conservation of big cats and Cheetahs in Namibia. Education here is not only provided by research to science but by teaching the farmers how to protect their livestock and future generations are involved too. Local schools are often invited to visit the center.

In staying here you are playing your part in supporting and learning about these amazing animals.

People

The national parks are owned and run by the state. They employ members of the local community and have an extensive training program that ensures that staff are trained from the most basic to managerial positions. They have the responsibility of not only protecting and conserving the wildlife but also their people, communities and heritage.

The guest house in Swakopmund is owner run, eco friendly and sources their produce locally supporting the local community.

The Okonjima project has been a community up-liftment project from the beginning. They have built a local school on the reserve for the children in the area, this school aims to support the youth in getting into higher education. They provide education to farmers in the community on how to protect and manage their livestock helping minimise their losses and in so doing the loss of the big cats. Africat strives to enable the communities to support themselves without endangering the Lion and cheetah populations.
