Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sweden vacations, Wolves, Moose and Beavers

Environment

We have now worked for more than 15 years to take people from all over the World to see some of Sweden’s most remarkable wild animals such as Moose, Wolves, Beavers and Bears. Our aim is to offer genuine nature experiences that support wildlife conservation and creates economic opportunities for the local society. We are proud to say that our tours are often used as a good example by others to prove that wild animals can be a substantial income for rural areas, and that these animals are worth more alive than dead.

We are an awarded ecotourism company, we won the Grand Travel Award for best ecotourism in Sweden 2009, and we are approved with the Swedish quality label for ecotourism, Natures Best since 2004.

We have applied a strict policy to reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible. Our boats are run on electric engines and the batteries are recharged on hydro-power. We also minimise driving and use carbon offset carbon emissions for our vehicles.

The return of the Wolves is a big issue in Sweden. Our guides work actively to track and monitor several Wolf packs in the area and constantly report observations and collect droppings as an important contribution to the monitoring of the population and to the Scandinavian Wolf project.

Community

We work with local guides only. That is why we can take you to the very best places to see wildlife up close in areas of Sweden where most other visitors never go. To make your vacation complete, we cooperate with small, family run guesthouses in rural villages with friendly and engaged staff. This create local job opportunities in rural areas and also provides you with a much more authentic experience. All of our guesthouses have cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food is locally produced and the dishes are mainly from the area, often with sustainable meat like wild boar and free ranging lambs along with wild chantarelles and sweetened lingonberries. We always offer vegatarian dishes. Blueberries can be picked in the forest along the walks and we often bring hot drinks out into the wild.

Our guides are interested in the ecosystem and the interaction between humans and wildlife. There are many conflicts that needs to be solved, and it is important to understand the details to get a bigger picture. We hope that each one of our guests returns home with more knowledge and greater respect for our wild animals.

Group size:
We operate small group tours where one guide work with a maximum of seven participants, simply because you get a better experience nature in a smaller group.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

apart from the obvious beauty and silence - unexpectedly seeing a mink and an grey owl

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

make sure that you take the right gear and pay the extra to swap a train ticket for a taxi back to the airport

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

the impact on the locals was minimal as we only met the guides and guest house owners- the education from the guides does support conservation, but in reality anyone booking this trip would already support conservation

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

enjoyed everything except sleeping in a tent - but I knew that I wouldn't enjoy that!

Thank you for your positive feedback! It was great having you here with us. Just a note that all of our guides are local and we only work with locally owned guesthouses and restaurants, so our tours definitively have a positive impact on the local society. Hope to see you again, perhaps for a Lapland trip!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Many memorable moments but the image which will stay in my mind for a long time is canoeing back home on a swedish lake in perfect conditions: no wind or rain, sun going down slowly, water absolutely still like a mirror, giving perfect reflections of the the forests and hills, the occasional fish jumping, osprey flying overhead. I didn't want it to end!

Most exciting: bears coming up to within a few feet of the hide we were in.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

This was a fairly 'full on' trip. You need good walking boots and wet weather gear. Be prepared to 'rough it' a little bit when camping and in the bear hides. Many of the animals you're looking for are nocturnal so a number of the activities started at about 5.00pm continuing well into the early hours. Remember June is 24 hours daylight in mid Sweden.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Totally, as far as possible. Most of the food was produced on the farm supporting the guest house or was purchased from local producers. The team were very aware of re-cycling/re-using or avoiding heavy packaging. Rubbish was always taken away and open fires exinguished thoroughly. We were encouraged not to use insect repellant.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was an excellent vacation experience. It ticked many boxes; our only regret is that we didn't hear/see wolves. They are very elusive! For outdoor, wildlife enthusiasts we would recommend our vacation provider wholeheartedly.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The best thing was hearing the wolves howl but the walk through the woods looking for signs of wolf and moose activity was also magical. Standing in the woods silently, in the dark waiting for the howl is an intense experience.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go determined to enjoy all parts of being in the outdoors with wildlife experts. Hearing or seeing wolves should be an extra bonus if it happens.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A local Pension is used as one of the bases. The vacation provider has a clear focus on conservation and there was an informative lecture from a wolf expert. They were open about the tension between encouraging tourism and impacting on the wildlife.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Outstanding! This was a great part of our wider experiences in Sweden and we would have loved to spend longer with our hosts.
