Responsible tourism: Croatian Islands yacht cruise

Environment

The management of these vessels is a member of the Green Sail initiative. Members are dedicated to sustainable tourism in Croatia and are passionate about raising awareness of environmental, economic and sustainable tourism policies in Croatia. They believe the promotion of environmental awareness in the region will have a prolonged and positive impact on the livelihoods of the local people and maintain Croatia as a sustainable tourism destination for future generations.

Green Sail aims to educate and build awareness amongst all stakeholders about sustainability and ‘Green Tourism’ in Croatia through activities and continued partnerships with local businesses. Green Sail is active on a local level in Croatia and is committed to discussion, raising awareness and implementing changes that will improve sustainability in Croatia.

It is vital sustainable tourism is embraced in Croatia to preserve its natural beauty as well as protect local stakeholders. Green Sail works with local businesses and captains to ensure business is not outsourced and remains a unique Croatian experience for their guests. Green Sail is the first step to initiating a ‘Green’ change in Croatia and educating current suppliers is proving promising.

We share our responsibility to protect the environment, customs and traditions of the region with our guests and find this is appreciated as they gain knowledge and receive a culturally diverse experience whilst traveling. Green Sail aims to improve the condition of some of the beaches along the Dalmatian coast, as well as promote sustainability throughout Croatia through partnerships with local businesses learning and educating the wider community of our policies on sustainable tourism.

Through such initiatives, we aim to:

+ Raise awareness of the importance of Green Tourism in the Adriatic.
+ Promote environmentally-friendly policies with our local business partners.
+ Actively participate in local community projects to clean up beaches/ports.
+ Educate stakeholders on sustainability practices and how to manage tourism sustainably in Croatia.

Community

Vast floating blocks of flats, otherwise known as cruise ships, arrive direct from Venice and spill their loads onto the Dubrovnik dock where they are met by a huge fleet of buses that whisk them for a couple of hours in the beautiful city. These monoliths cruise past one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines with barely a second glance, and without a thought to the places they are missing.

Our vessel, on the other hand, stops at many small ports and towns where we can fully enjoy some of the very best that Croatia has to offer. The money that we will spend in many of these smaller communities will help to preserve the fantastic heritage of these antique coastline. Our visits to Mljet National Park & The Benedictine monastery on St Mary Isle will help preserve them by putting a little funding directly into their coffers.

Our vessels are captained and crewed by Croatians, and most of the produce served on board in sourced locally, sometimes from the crew’s family members.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It was a fantastic experience. The boat was beautiful, the service and food first class and it was such a good way to see the islands. We loved swimming from the back of the boat too.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The upper deck cabins are worth the extra money. Make sure you take Kuna as euros are not widely accepted on the islands. Make sure you get as much information as possible about which boat you will be on etc as it is pretty chaotic at Split harbour. We felt we were well informed but met several other travelers who were not given such clear information.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. We had local guides at all our stops and plenty of opportunity to eat, drink and spend money locally at each stop.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was fantastic. We met some lovely people and had some great experiences.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Hard to say, so many moments. I guess top of the list would be swimming in the sea, off the back of the boat. I loved both Split and Dubrovnik, but also the lovely islands between them, especially Mljet national park.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Learn some Croatian words, and how to pronounce them. This is much appreciated.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, there were a few trips to local restaurants and parks. Every day, the boat seemed to be stocked by local people. Hard to say if it reduced impact, but hopefully it supported conservation, when we visited a national park.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a wonderful, relaxing break.
