Once clients arrive in Johannesburg, the entire journey through South Africa, Lesotho, Mozambique and Eswatini is conducted by road. There are no internal or regional flights, significantly reducing aviation-related emissions compared to fly-in safari itineraries. Cross-border sections, including the Sani Pass and the journey to Maputo, are completed overland in shared vehicles.

Shared transport and human-powered activities
All transfers and safaris are operated using shared minibuses and 4x4 vehicles, lowering CO2 emissions per person. The programme also integrates several low-carbon activities, including hiking in the Drakensberg, a guided walking safari in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, snorkelling and canoeing near Kosi Bay, and extended time on foot at scenic sites along the Panorama Route. These experiences reduce reliance on fuel-powered excursions while enhancing immersion in nature.

Lower-impact accommodation and food practices
We prioritise locally owned lodges that employ community staff and use natural ventilation, solar water heating and water-saving systems, particularly in drought-sensitive regions. Vegetarian meals are available daily and vegan options can be arranged in advance, helping reduce food-related emissions. Many properties source seasonal produce locally and aim to minimise food waste and single-use plastics. Pre-departure information encourages guests to travel with refillable bottles, conserve energy and water, and review airline emissions data when booking flights.

Direct funding for protected areas
The itinerary includes entry fees to major conservation areas including Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, Kruger National Park, Maputo National Park and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Seasonal turtle monitoring at Kosi Bay operates under conservation permits and contributes to marine species protection.

Safaris, wilderness walks and marine excursions are led by qualified local guides, strengthening community livelihoods and conservation incentives. Guests receive guidance on wildlife viewing ethics, maintaining safe distances, avoiding wildlife products and preventing litter or invasive species spread between ecosystems. By focusing on regulated reserves rather than unverified wildlife attractions, the trip actively supports structured biodiversity conservation across southern Africa.

While a small number of nights may use branded city hotels for logistical convenience (such as near Johannesburg or in Maputo), the overall structure of the trip prioritises regionally owned businesses, ensuring that the majority of tourism revenue remains within the destination countries.

Local guides, crafts and community visits
The itinerary maximises local economic benefit by employing regional guides and specialist safari rangers in protected areas including Kruger National Park and Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park. Many staff are recruited directly from nearby communities surrounding reserves and lodges. Partners are expected to meet or exceed national minimum wage legislation and comply with local labour laws.

Inclusive income opportunities
The itinerary supports income-generating opportunities for groups that may otherwise face economic exclusion, including rural women artisans at craft markets, community performers in Mafalala (Maputo), and locally employed hospitality workers in remote areas. Several craft initiatives in Eswatini and KwaZulu-Natal employ and train women and youth, helping expand economic participation.
