PlanetDuring this tour in particular, we try to reduce the negative environmental impacts of travel as much as possible through using local transport and overlanding throughout, rather than flying. We do the majority of our sightseeing on foot, which is perfect for visiting Mexico's small villages with their immaculately kept colonial architecture.
All of our leaders have been trained on how to promote responsible tourism, particularly focusing on reducing the use of single-use plastic. On this trip the leader will advise you where to refill water bottles with clean, safe drink water, therefore reducing the necessity to buy plastic water bottles throughout your trip. We also expect all of our leaders to practice responsible waste management practices along the lines of a 'leave no trace' policy. With a food tour this is extremely important given the problem of food wastage. During the tour we sample a large variety of food but in small portions, ensuring that you keep waste to a minimum.
As a travel company we are continually looking for ways to improve and are proud to be ‘Responsible in everything we do’. Education is key, and so all staff, Tour Leaders and partnering suppliers are trained in responsible and sustainable tourism. At our Head Office, we continually strive towards a sustainable and planet-friendly working environment, including having solar panels installed and a company commitment to reducing our plastic usage.
PeopleThroughout this trip there are innumerable opportunities to interact with local people, eating authentic and home-cooked food produced with regional ingredients and using local suppliers. We visit the small taco vans that line the streets of Mexico City, learn to make tamales with a local family near San Cristobal, eat at a family-run cacao ranch where we learn how small-scale farmers produce and sell chocolate, and go to countless food markets in Merida, Oaxaca and Mexico City where vendors sell local produce. This trip really gives an in-depth cultural insight to Mexican life, not only through food but also connecting history, religion and art.
Our leader is Mexican, and throughout the trip we employ guides who reside locally, ensuring that money is spent within the local economy.
