1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The opportunity to volunteer with wildlife, to see how a sanctuary can be run a proper manner with great respect for the animals.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
A week is sufficient to get the most of it. Come a bit off season, as it gets very hot in the area.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Yes. Both with the animal conservation and the work they are doing with the local communities where they and us were able to help out for a day.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Amazing. The entire family loved it. Everything was well planned and the hospitality was great.

Planet
Carbon ReductionThe wildlife sanctuary center is located on a 1650-hectare an hour away from Mosselbay down the beautiful Garden Route. The main volunteer house is a farmhouse with 3-bedrooms and has modern comforts and spacious relaxation areas. There are also 2 Safari tents available that can accommodate families of up to 5 members. One-man tents are also available. The center caters to vegans and vegetarians. Home-grown produce when in season, is used when available and the rest of the foods are supplied by the local grocery stores for daily or weekly breakfast/lunch foods. Food waste is used as compost for the vegetable garden on the farm. The farm fully operates on solar panels and gas. Water is sourced from the mountain spring pools. Local amenities and shops are about 30 minutes away.
Environmental and Wildlife
The sanctuary is located in a fynbos-rich region surrounded by mountains, spring pools, nature reserves, and 1 hour away from the ocean. Several scenic routes can be enjoyed and activities like pitching tents, cooking on open fire, hiking, and swimming can be enjoyed. The farm also has several wildlife parks nearby like the Birds of Prey rehabilitation center and the Butterfly Sanctuary. The wildlife sanctuary provides a haven for distressed and neglected lions, where they can live in safety, free from abuse and exploitation, and where they are well cared for with compassion and dignity.
People
Local EconomyThe wildlife sanctuary employs 7 staff members of which 2 are women. Employees are paid above minimum wage. We use local operators on the ground for these services. 100% of the profits go back into the work of the sanctuary and we are grateful that you have contributed towards the caring and well-being of the predators. Your volunteering has gone beyond just the animals but also towards the sustainability of the farm school and local community.
Employment, Inclusivity, and Diversity
Our supply chain is made up of the local people of the area. We make use of small, owner-managed companies that are based locally and employ individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. With all our volunteering projects, we give up to 5% of donations towards conservation. We encourage all volunteers to show respect for local people and their customs. Participants will work alongside permanent staff, forming close bonds and getting an insight into real life in rural South Africa.
