CARBON REDUCTION

We provide practical guidance before and during the tour, including:

Encouraging travelers to pack light, reducing aircraft weight and fuel use.
Advising the selection of lower-emission flights, using tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner which display CO2 data.
Suggesting direct flights when possible to reduce multiple takeoffs/landings.
Encouraging re-useable bottles, bags, and minimizing single-use plastics.
Recommending responsible behavior on tour, such as keeping vehicles shared, minimizing engine idling, and respecting natural habitats.

We also provide our Eco-Travel Tips Sheet upon confirmation of booking. We inform guests that some airlines allow them to pay to increase their share of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). We reference sources such as KLM and British Airways for travelers wishing to reduce their overall carbon footprint through SAF contributions.

At present, electric vehicles are not available in the Danakil or Lalibela regions due to: Rugged volcanic terrain, lack of charging infrastructure, extremely remote routes. However: In Lalibela town, short-distance transfers often use community-owned minivans, reducing per-person emissions. In Danakil, we always share 4x4 vehicles among small groups to reduce fuel use, road impact, and overall trip emissions. We regularly update our fleet options and plan to integrate electric vehicles as soon as infrastructure allows.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

All guides in this program are from the local community:

Lalibela: Cultural guides certified by the Lalibela Tourism Office. Trained in history, geology, and heritage preservation.

Danakil Depression & Erta Ale: Afar local scouts and guides with deep generational knowledge of volcanic activity, safety routes, and desert ecosystems
Required to undergo safety training, environmental awareness orientation, and first-aid basics. These guides are essential for both safety and accurate interpretation of the region’s natural environment.

In these regions, invasive species are less widespread than in Ethiopia’s highlands, but two concerns exist: A. Prosopis juliflora (Mesquite tree); Expanding in Afar lowlands, competes with native grasses important for Afar pastoralists. We reduce spread by:

Avoiding off-track driving
Supporting Afar programs that convert Prosopis wood into charcoal for controlled removal
Reporting new spread areas to local rangers

B. Human-Introduced Seeds

Tourists can unintentionally spread seeds through shoes and clothing.
We mitigate this by advising travelers to clean footwear before Danakil entry and avoid carrying plant material between sites.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

All accommodations on this 5 day tour are locally owned, including:

Lalibela hotels: small, family-run lodges
Danakil camps and Erta Ale shelters: operated entirely by Afar communities

Some stays, such as Afar-operated desert camps, function similarly to community homestays, with income directly benefiting families.

We prioritize local involvement at every stage:

Local guides: in Lalibela and Danakil
Afar drivers, scouts, cooks, and camel handlers: typically 10–12 community members benefit per tour
Village visits: Afar communities receive direct payments for access, guiding, and security
Local crafts: optional visits to Lalibela artisan cooperatives (weaving, metalwork, stonework)

Over 65% of the tour revenue remains within local communities.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

We intentionally employ and support:

A. Afar Indigenous Communities (Danakil)

Employment for 10–12 workers per trip (drivers, scouts, cooks, camel handlers)
Income directly supports remote families with limited economic opportunities

B. Women’s Cooperative Groups (Lalibela)

20–25 women earn income through handicrafts, weaving, and coffee ceremonies

C. Small Family Guesthouses & Local Youth

Young guides and assistants gain income and training through involvement in our tours

Some churches are accessible with assistance
Narrow passages and uneven stone floors may challenge mobility-limited travelers

Danakil Depression & Erta Ale

Not suitable for travelers with significant mobility issues due to:

Harsh volcanic terrain
Steep, rocky ascent to Erta Ale
Extreme heat
Walking on uneven lava surfaces
Lack of medical facilities in remote regions

Vision or Hearing Impairments
We can provide one-on-one guiding, slow pacing, and clear verbal or written interpretation
Local guides are experienced in adjusting communication style
