Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

CARBON REDUCTIONOur Norway retreats take place in remote coastal and mountain regions, and most guests arrive via an international flight followed by onward travel within Norway. Reaching Senja Island typically involves a domestic flight, ferry crossing, and short road transfer, while Valldal is reached by domestic flight or train followed by a road transfer.
All transfers during the retreats are shared, and activities are planned locally to minimise unnecessary travel. In Senja, most experiences take place directly from our base, with little or no additional transport required. For the west Norway retreat, we actively encourage train travel where possible.
Guests receive a conscious packing list ahead of departure. Meals at both locations follow a zero-waste policy, with recycling systems in place.
ENVIRONMENT AND LANDSCAPE
Both retreats are set within sensitive natural environments shaped by mountains, fjords, rivers, and coastal ecosystems. Outdoor activities include hiking, kayaking, boating, body rafting, and swimming, all led by experienced local guides or operators. Wildlife encounters are not deliberately sought, and activities are designed to minimise disturbance to natural habitats.
On Senja, the retreat is hosted at a Green Key certified property. This certification recognises high environmental standards across energy use, water conservation, waste management, food sourcing, cleaning products, and guest engagement. The property uses renewable hydropower, energy-efficient systems, environmentally certified cleaning products, and robust waste sorting. Guests are encouraged to take part in responsible practices such as reduced towel and linen changes and mindful water and energy use.
In Valldal, the retreat is hosted at a locally owned, family-run property where sustainability is rooted in architectural conservation and minimal site disruption. Cabins are elevated to preserve natural terrain, built using local materials, and carefully positioned to blend into the landscape. Food is sourced from local farms and producers, and experiences are designed to foster a respectful, low-impact relationship with the surrounding environment.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYAt both locations, we work exclusively with locally owned accommodation and local suppliers. In Senja, the retreat is hosted by a locally owned business, while in Valldal the property is family-run. Local guiding companies, drivers, boat operators, and activity providers are used throughout.
Food is prepared by local kitchen teams using regionally sourced ingredients, supporting small producers and keeping the majority of economic benefit within the local area.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
Apart from our visiting yoga teachers and retreat hosts, the people involved in delivering these retreats are local. All local staff work within established Norwegian employment standards.
These retreats are led with inclusivity in mind; however, due to their natural settings, terrain includes gravel paths, uneven ground, and hills. As such, the retreats are not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with significant mobility challenges. A reasonable level of mobility is required to fully participate, though activities are optional and adapted to group ability.
We have been a certified B Corp since 2023, reflecting our wider commitment to responsible business practices, people, and the planet.
