Highlights of where to go in Finland in the winter & what to expect.
Sea kayaking vacations are some of the most popular trips on Responsible Travel, and it's not just because they make for great adventures.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.
Planet
CARBON REDUCTIONShared transfers are included from Turku Bus Station to Nauvo and back, as well as for the activities included in the itinerary. Guests can travel to Turku by train or bus, reducing the need for private cars. Human-powered activities form a central part of the vacation: guests explore the archipelago on foot on days 2 and 5 and by kayak on days 3 and 6. Yoga and meditation are also low-carbon activities.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
The kayaking excursions take place in the Archipelago National Park and are led by experienced local guides who know its marine environment and winter conditions.
Before each excursion, guests receive guidance on how to move responsibly, avoid disturbing wildlife and leave no litter behind. The group is limited to a maximum of 11 participants, helping to reduce pressure on sensitive natural areas.
Activities are adapted to the weather and ice conditions, and guests stay on routes selected by local guides.
People
LOCAL ECONOMYThis vacation is operated entirely by local people and supports businesses in Nauvo during the quieter winter season. Guests stay at the locally owned B&B Köpmans and use local restaurants, taxi services, guides, Yoga Archipelago and Nagu SeaKayak. The itinerary also includes a visit to Nagu Distillery and meals featuring local products. This keeps a significant share of the vacation income within the archipelago and helps local businesses operate outside the busy summer season.
EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY
All the guides and service providers delivering the vacation are based in Finland, and the activities are led by people from the local archipelago community. The vacation creates income for local guides, instructors, accommodation providers, restaurants and transport operators during the low season. Yoga instruction is gentle and individually adapted.
The yoga teacher is a trained physiotherapist with experience in rehabilitating people with sensory impairments. No previous kayaking or yoga experience is required, and participants are supported according to their level of experience.
