CARBON REDUCTION

This Private Wilderness Experience is designed around low-impact travel within a remote and protected environment. Once guests arrive at Mkambati Nature Reserve, the itinerary is entirely land-based, eliminating the need for additional internal flights.

The experience prioritises human-powered activities, including guided hiking, wildlife tracking on foot, cycling, kayaking, snorkelling, and paddleboarding across multiple days of the itinerary. These activities not only reduce carbon emissions but also allow for a deeper, slower connection with the landscape.

Transport within the reserve is kept to a minimum and organised collectively where needed, reducing emissions per person. The small group format further ensures a lower overall environmental footprint.

Accommodation at GweGwe Lodge has been thoughtfully designed to blend into the natural surroundings, reducing environmental disturbance and energy demand. Meals are prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, significantly reducing food miles and supporting seasonal consumption. Vegetarian options are available daily, offering lower-impact dietary choices.

Guests are encouraged to travel consciously, with guidance provided on reducing carbon impacts, including flight choices and packing considerations.

ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE

This experience takes place entirely within the Mkambati Nature Reserve, a protected area and globally recognised biodiversity hotspot. Entry fees and lodge operations directly support the conservation and long-term protection of this ecologically significant landscape.

GweGwe Lodge operates in close partnership with the Mkambati Land Trust and Eastern Cape Parks, ensuring that tourism actively contributes to conservation and land stewardship. The reserve is home to over 2,000 plant species, diverse birdlife, and important wildlife populations, including one of the largest colonies of Cape vultures.

Expert naturalist guides accompany all activities, offering in-depth ecological knowledge and ensuring that wildlife encounters are respectful and low-impact.

Guests are educated on responsible behaviour in sensitive environments, helping to minimise disturbance and promote long-term conservation awareness.

Tourism here directly contributes to nature protection and restoration efforts, including anti-poaching initiatives such as the development of the “Green Griffons” women-led ranger unit. The model of conservation tourism ensures that the land remains protected while generating tangible benefits for both biodiversity and local communities.

People

LOCAL ECONOMY

This trip directly supports the local economy through its partnership with the Mkambati Land Trust, which represents community members from seven surrounding villages. The Trust owns 18,000 hectares of land and receives 9% of the gross revenue generated by GweGwe Lodge, ensuring that tourism income flows directly back into the community.

Employment opportunities are created through the lodge, with staff hired locally from the amaMpondo community. In addition, initiatives such as the development of an organic vegetable farm aim to further localise supply chains and create sustainable income streams.

Guests contribute to the local economy not only through their stay but also through the use of local guides, services, and community-led initiatives connected to the reserve.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

The majority of staff employed at GweGwe Lodge are from the local amaMpondo community, with ongoing training and skills development provided to support long-term employment and career growth.

The project actively promotes inclusivity through initiatives such as the “Green Griffons”, a women-led anti-poaching unit that creates meaningful employment opportunities in conservation for women—an area traditionally underrepresented.
Community outreach programs are an integral part of the initiative.

All employment follows fair wage principles in line with national standards, and the project fosters an inclusive and respectful working environment regardless of gender, background, or identity.
