Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing we've worked to maximise the benefits of your vacation to local people and places, and minimise any negative impacts.

Planet

Carbon reduction

We minimise our environmental footprint through small group sizes (maximum 7–8 people), avoiding all internal flights, and using shared transport — a 9-seat van throughout the entire trip. Clients never travel individually by private car hire. Our trips are hiking-based by design, meaning clients spend the majority of each day on foot, exploring landscapes that reward slow, human-powered travel. We do not arrange flights for clients and never include domestic or internal flights in any itinerary. In our pre-departure information, we actively encourage clients to check CO2 emissions by route using Google Flights or Skyscanner, to choose direct flights where possible, and to pack light. We do not promote carbon offsets as a substitute for reducing emissions. We prioritise locally owned accommodation across all stops. Norway's electricity comes almost entirely from renewable sources — predominantly hydropower — meaning our accommodation and the places we visit run on one of the cleanest energy grids in the world. Vegetarian and vegan options are available daily, and we dine at locally owned restaurants where fresh Arctic fish, local dairy, and seasonal Norwegian ingredients are the foundation of every meal. We are developing a partner questionnaire to formally assess food waste and sourcing policies.

Environment & wildlife

In Northern Norway, we hike protected coastal trails, mountain ridges, and Arctic landscapes across Tromsø, Vesterålen and the Lofoten Islands. We avoid over-touristed sites and peak-season crowds wherever possible, respect all local wildlife regulations and protected coastal zones, and follow strict Leave No Trace principles — including a carry-in, carry-out policy, where all waste is taken with us and disposed of responsibly. Norway has some of the strongest environmental protections in the world, and we take that seriously — staying on marked trails, never crossing barriers or fences in protected areas, and treating every landscape as the privilege it is. As founder and guide, I hold a degree in environmental studies, and sharing knowledge about Arctic species, coastal ecosystems and their conservation status is an essential part of every trip — understanding what lives in these landscapes, what is fragile, and why it matters is not an optional extra. We personally vet all accommodation partners before use, asking about plastic reduction, recycling and water use, and we are formalising this into a written partner checklist that will include questions on food waste, palm oil and building materials. We actively reduce single-use plastic throughout the trip and drink tap water — Norway's tap water is among the cleanest in the world.

People

Local economy

In Tromsø, Vesterålen and Lofoten, we stay exclusively in locally owned guesthouses and properties, ensuring that tourist spending stays within the local economy and supports the fishing communities and families who have called these islands home for generations. We do not use international hotel chains on any itinerary, and we require all local operating partners to pay at least the legal minimum standards and personally vet them to ensure fair working conditions.
Trips are led by me personally as founder and tour guide (or my highly experienced colleague). I hold a degree in environmental studies and bring a deep appreciation for Arctic nature, coastal ecosystems, and the resilient communities that have shaped life in Northern Norway for centuries. This means clients don't just see Lofoten — they understand it, and the people who live and work within it.
We dine exclusively at locally owned restaurants where fresh Arctic fish, reindeer, local dairy, and seasonal produce are at the heart of every meal — celebrating the region's culinary traditions rather than bypassing them. We encourage clients to buy directly from local producers and artisans rather than tourist shops, and to leave reviews and tips for local businesses — helping small restaurants, guesthouses and artisans in remote Arctic communities gain visibility and income beyond our visits.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity

We are committed to welcoming every traveler without exception. Our trips are fully LGBTQ+ friendly, and we believe that travel should be inclusive — regardless of background, nationality, gender or sexual orientation, both in how we operate and in who we welcome. Due to the hiking-based and active nature of our expeditions, the terrain is not suitable for people with limited mobility; we are transparent about this in our trip descriptions so that clients can make an informed decision before booking.
