Our family walking vacations & tours

You might live to ramble, but it can sometimes be a hard sell persuading your children to embark on a family walking vacation (or even to get them to do their laces up). However, throw in a safari camp, a donkey to carry your bags, a mountain yurt or a swim at the end of each day, and they start to warm to the idea. Our family hiking vacations are tailored to you, with manageable distances and fun activities combined. Add in a guide who knows exactly how to get young people interested in the landscape, wildlife and all the natural adventures that await, and you’ll convert the staunchest of non-walkers.

Highlights of our family walking vacations

What to expect from a family walking vacation

Many of our family walking vacations are tailor made so that they can be adapted to the interests and walking abilities of your family. Expect enjoyable walking that entices you out the door, rather than pushing you on an extreme adventure. Our vacations for families will be planned on trails with manageable distances, and are often center-based with a choice of walks, so you can pick the route that calls to you the most that day, or simply plan a rest day. Altitudes are kept low, and walking is generally kept to areas with predictable weather, in places that aren’t too cold or too hot. Expect luggage transfers and help with bags – this can even take the form of a donkey carrying everything for you!

Many walking trips have minimum ages, but we know that every child is different. Our tailor made trips can be flexible about ages if you know you’ve got a little trooper in your midst.

Where to go for a family walking vacation

You can think big for a family walking vacation and walk some of the world’s best routes – for instance, don’t discount Nepal with your children – you can stick to lower altitudes and still hike in the Annapurna region, or in the beautiful Kathmandu Valley. You can shorten Peru’s Inca Trail to a one-day hike on our vacations, and walk with kids as young as six. The famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route isn’t out of the reach of families, either, and we can plan a multi-day walking itinerary along it with manageable daily distances that suit everyone. Elsewhere in Europe, there is beautiful, family-friendly walking everywhere from the Stockholm archipelago to the Alps, and from the pretty coast of Catalonia to the wild mountains of Albania.

Excellent. Stunning walks where we hardly saw another person. Eating out every evening supported local businesses and the environmental impact was reduced by utilising local buses and ferries.read more
