Our Machu Picchu vacations & tours
Our Machu Picchu vacations take you up into the clouds, to this ancient Incan citadel that sits at 2,430m in the majestic Peruvian Andes. The temples, terraces and other structures of this architectural masterpiece were all assembled without the use of mortar, yet for the most part remain remarkably intact, a testament to the skill involved. Most people reach Machu Picchu by taking the train from Cusco. Our tours slot all the necessary pieces together for you, including your accommodation, transport and entry tickets, so that you can relax and enjoy this amazing experience.
You need to book well in advance for Machu Picchu, as tickets are limited, as are permits to trek the Inca Trail. There are clearly marked routes around the site that must be followed – the Peruvian authorities are determined to protect it while ensuring as many people as possible can visit.

Highlights of our Machu Picchu vacations
Avoiding the crowds
An iconic landmark will always be busy, and Machu Picchu is the most famous attraction in Peru, and one of the most famous in South America. But exploring the site never feels overcrowded, thanks to a rigid ticketing system that caps visitor numbers at 4,500 per day during the regular season and 5,600 during the high season.
Controlling entry in this way isn’t just about making your experience more enjoyable. These ancient ruins are delicate, and potentially at risk from high levels of footfall. The guides on our Machu Picchu vacations ensure that their guests stick to the marked trails around the site to avoid causing any accidental damage. With luck, and responsible tourism, Machu Picchu will still be around to amaze tourists in another 600 years.

The Inca Trail
Most people reach Machu Picchu by taking the three-hour train ride from Cusco to Aguas Caliente, followed by a short hike or bus ride to the citadel. But for those who want more of a challenge, and to enjoy the magnificent Andean landscapes, the Inca Trail trek makes for a thrilling adventure.
The Inca Trail begins near Ollantaytambo and takes four days to reach Machu Picchu. However, the total distance is just 43km, the difficulty is in the gradients involved. Luckily, you will have the assistance of sprightly porters all the way. They bound up the trail ahead of your group, setting up the sleeping, kitchen and toilet tents, preparing hearty meals, so that by the time you arrive at camp every afternoon you can just sink down and relax. Bearing in mind that they each carry up to 25kg and take few breaks, and make this journey several times a month, this would be an exhausting job for even the fittest people. Our vacations take a strict and responsible approach to the welfare of the porters they employ, ensuring they are paid fairly, are well equipped, get sufficient rest and are not overloaded.
This is a physically demanding trek, requiring a good level of fitness. And also calorie-rich meals. On our Machu Picchu vacations incorporating the Inca Trail your cooks will prepare nutritious and flavourful meals using food that is locally grown. Fresh fruit and vegetables for you, income for local farming communities. Tuck in!
