Tips?
To inform themselves very early (6 month before booking) to get the most out of it. We therefore had the best vacations ever and people we met on our tour were just jealouse, because we could do all the cool stuff (we had organised the permits for Huayna Picchu, the Trek to Huchuy Qosqo etc.)

Walking the trail was very hard in places, but so well organised that it was a great sense of achievement to complete each day and the trail itself. When we got to the Sun Gate above Machu Picchu we arrived in a lot of low cloud which took the edge off it, however we walked on a bit further and got a great high level view of the lost city so we were more than happy with this.

1. Be ready for sleepless nights on the cruise. They sail - at speed through choppy waters - from 1am-5am each night
2. Keep a lot of change for the never-ending list of people to tip - drivers, guides, waiters, bell-boys, cleaners
3. Be ready for massive (yes, massive) queues to get up and down to Macchu Picchu on the bus. Walking down is OK (1 hour) but I wouldn't recommend walking up.

Taking boat trips on the side tributaries of the Amazon! We loved seeing all the animals.
Tips?
Allow more time at the Ankatera Maccu Picchu Hotel. There is a lot to do there and we didn't allow any time there
(except for seeing the ruins).
Local benefits?
The Amazon portion of our trip benefited local villages and supported conservation of primates. The time in the Sacred
Valley definitely benefited local cooperatives and individuals.

Tips?
Do it! Prepare for a serious physical challenge, especially the Inca trail requires a good condition, steps all the way uphill en slippery stones (when it rains) downhill.
