Our Sichuan vacations & tours
Sichuan has a scenery as dynamic as its spicy cuisine. The world’s largest stone buddha, the Leshan Giant Buddha, stands 71m tall, but there’s no more towering presence in the province than its resident giant pandas, kept in special breeding and research centers like Chengdu Research Base. In the east you have Chengdu, the capital, and scenic national parks and riverside towns. Head west and you reach eastern Tibet’s high plateaus, home to nomadic herders and their yaks. Our vacations use local guides and small and locally run hotels, striving to give you a taste of a fully authentic Sichuan – mouthwatering indeed.

Sichuan vacation highlights
Panda watching in Sichuan
Welcome to panda land: Sichuan is the province of China most associated with these gentle giants, thanks to famous research centers like Chengdu Research Base and others where you can see them up close. Some of the adorable residents are so popular that they have hundreds of thousands of social media followers. You can even volunteer with pandas on our trips – spend a day at a research center, learning to make panda cake out of bamboo and help clean out their enclosures.
Sichuan family vacations
Pottery and pandas! Monkeys and magical face changing: our Sichuan family vacations show that this province is perfect for traveling with kids. Not only are there amazing fluffy pandas to see, but you can all muck in and learn how to make porcelain pottery and meet playful monkeys at Mount Emei. Children will love the magic of bian lian, a dramatic art where performers change masks in an instant. The skill of ‘face changing’ is a closely guarded secret handed down through generations. China is very safe for travelers, easy to get around and all in all an easy experience for families. We recommend it for kids aged six and above.
Sichuan cycling vacations
Sichuan is well known for its diverse landscapes. You can cycle out of Chengdu to the panda research center for starters, then go on to explore China’s old towns – restored villages and settlements that make for scenic cycling. Leave the saddle for excursions to visit pandas and hike on Mount Emei. Alternatively, head further west in the province towards eastern Tibet, reaching high elevations as you cross 4,000m passes around Yala Mountain, meeting nomadic communities herding their yaks through the grasslands.
Best time to go to Sichuan
Eastern Sichuan is not known for its sunny weather – in fact, it’s often cloudy and wet, and the city of Ya’an even has the nickname ‘the cloudy city’. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Sichuan, as in the rest of China. You avoid the hot summer when there’s high humidity, high rainfall and temperatures in the 30s°C. You also dodge the cold winters, when even fuzzy pandas come down the mountains to escape the chill. In May and September, average daily highs are a comfortable 25°C in Chengdu, and humidity is low.
