The most memorable was visiting Anuradhapura with my excellent guide Kapil and the Buddhist Temples during Vesak Poya (one of the main Buddhist vacations celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of the Buddha) with serene Sri Lankan pilgrims all dressed in white and poya lanterns lining the roads floating in the breeze - truly magical.

It was all exciting really from the beautiful beachside hotels to the wildlife parks. At Palagama beach the food was amazing especially when I was shown their own vegetable garden and we picked fresh vegetables that were cooked as individual curries for my dinner that evening. Don’t waste any time in Colombo. Book hotels based upon recommendations if possible. There is a huge variety of quality at apparently the same standard. Old colonial is no longer necessarily the best.

The vacation is ideal for those wishing to relax and take things at a leisurely pace. Be aware most of the hotels are located in fairly remote locations so not ideal for sightseeing or activities but our driver was very good at suggesting an itinerary that suited us and fitted plenty of things on our travel days maximising our time.

Sri Lanka is an island of diversity from world heritage sites, amazing coastline to an abundance of wildlife and conservation. It's impossible to highlight one particular place or part of the vacation as being special as each has its own appeal and memories. It was just the right mix for us.

Definitely the elephant safari, we came out of the forest and saw one elephant is the distance having a bath in the lake, we stopped for a while and took a lot of photos. The driver then drove off to another part of the lake and there before us were about four hundred of them, mums, babies and young ones, absolutely breath taking and such a privilege.

On the safari in Udawalawe National Park, we saw elephants, crocodiles, water buffalo, many bird species like Blue Tailed Bee Eaters and India Rollers and also lots of reptiles...I feel so lucky that our whale watching trip saw blue whales in their natural habitat. Too many to mention - getting to go to the North - Jaffna and Delft, the Ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnuaruwa. the peaceful and beautiful beaches
on the East and South coasts. The amazing temples and quirky workshops - paper products from elephant dung and a whole array of products from coconut
husks. The safari parks and all the drivers and guides. Especially my main guide and driver - Harry.
