Responsible tourism: Archaeological Tour in Greece, 12 days

Environment

We are also owners of the small city hotel that you will stay during your vacations which in addition with our office they recycle paper and plastic and transfers it to a recycling company in the industrial area. Plastics caps are gathered and donated to a local club that helps children with special needs by buying them special trolleys. We also, as a company, offer 10 euros per person for the environment, for offsetting the carbon emissions caused by this trip. This money are going to be used, in cooperation with the local Forestry Office, the Greek Climbing Club of Tripoli and the Tripoli Ecologist Club, for reforestation in our mountains, that had been hit by great fires in the summer of 2007. At your arrival here you will be given a Travelers Code of Conduct, where you will get informed about how to apply maximum responsibility during your vacations concerning environmental and socio-cultural factors. Some examples are: Do not disturb animals, plants or their natural habitat, Leave only footprints. Don't litter. You may even pick up and properly dispose of litter left by others, Report any environmentally damaging activities you may witness.
We hope that our effort will push other companies, individuals or local authorities to contribute to this project and be part to our effort for a better environment for the next generations.

Community

Choosing our vacations, you choose responsible vacations. As Mr Panagiotopoulos, founder and president of our company, was born and raised here, one of his biggest concerns is to secure that tourism will not affect negatively our area in ecological and socio-cultural way, and also that the locals will mostly benefit from your travel.

Our company which is the organizer and operator of this package is local-based and all our guides, drivers and employees are locals too, ensuring not only the economical benefit of our area but also your cultural benefit. In this trip, you will visit so many different places and you will always be surrounded by locals, experiencing the Greek way of living. But the most important thing for us, is that your presence here gives us a strong negotiation card for pressing the local authorities for the development of our area, such us constructing cycling streets in our city or finance and organize better our archaeological museums and sites. During our visit to the archaeological sites if it’s a close distance we propose to them not to use the car. Also, we have made our guests aware of the regulation in advance. For example, we advise them to shoot as many photos as they like but not to throw objects at the surrounding area or touch and sit in the monuments.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Too many great experiences to pick one.... the "hero" excursions were amazing, but so were all the little things. Warm bread at breakfast in Tripoli, lots of laughter as we cycled through cherry orchards, the peace and beauty of Galaxidi in the morning sunshine ... and successfully climbing all those stairs.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Remember that you'll climb (lots of) hills and stair. Prepare your knees and wear the right shoes/sandals. Travel light.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Local staff (from Tripoli) allowed growth outside of key tourist areas. We also used smaller accommodation providers and ate locally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Amazing.... the people, the place, the organisation... and fabulous fellow travelers. Highly recommended.
