1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The hikes were incredible. As beautiful as any hikes in Austria, Switzerland, or the Dolimites of Italy and at half the cost. Slovakia is such a beautiful, friendly country. The people were so nice and so many dog lovers. Tatranska Lomnica is a lovely mountain town. The Pension Slalom were we stayed is perfectly located two minutes from the train station, Bus Stop, and The Information Center. The owners try very hard to make everything perfect. The resturant in the Pension is the best we found in the town.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Check the weather forecast. Lomnicky Stit is a must see. Make sure you see it on a clear day. My wife and I do not speak Slovakian but only German and English and had no problem conversing with everyone.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Hope so. My wife and I believe in "leave no trace" and it appears so do the hikers in Slovakia as all the trails were spotless clean and easy to read markings.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Wonderful. We had a great time. Everything, hikes, accommodations, food, transportations, were great.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Walking and scrambling above the snow line to the origins of waterfalls.
Unexpectedly coming across beautiful small tarns, rugged scenery and wild flowers.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Check the level of the walks and the ascent and descent. The paths are very well marked but as you go higher the terrain is very rugged in places. You need a good head for heights and to be comfortable with scrambling and using chains in some places. I generally found the walking times to be accurate (I'm a moderate pace walker) but good to allow a little longer on the last walk which has a very long ascent and descent-but is very rewarding. Although the terrain is
quite challenging in places there were plenty of families with children doing
these walks.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I used public transport (extremely cheap and efficient) to get from Poprad station to my hotel and you use the train to get to several of the walks plus a bus at the end of the first walk. The hotel was staffed by local people.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was a very well organized vacation with an interesting range of walks. The company were very helpful giving advice beforehand. I was a solo traveler and had been concerned about safety but was assured that these walks were safe for a solo traveler. As stated above the paths are very clearly marked and well used by all ages. I never felt alone but able to enjoy sometimes quite challenging
and rewarding walking. Incorporating the well stocked mountain huts into
the walking was also interesting. Overall a very rewarding vacation in beautiful scenery. I would like to give four and a half stars!

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Self-guided adventures are small groups by their very nature (it’ll only be you and a few others at most). This is better for the environment and means you get to see more because you can get off-the-beaten track.

We use public transport where we can – on this trip you will use trams, cable cars, trains and small buses. This minimises the impact on the environment and saves travelers money. This money can then be spent in other local places, such as a traditional restaurant, thus benefitting the local economy even more.

Our walking guides will give advice on how to travel responsibly in order not to do any damage to the local environment. During the trip, we will visit the Tatra National Park (TANAP). Their undertaking is to protect the park’s nature, flora and fauna, and by being here, we are helping in this mission. We will make sure we adhere to the rules of the park, walk only on trails, and leave wildlife and plants undisturbed.

People

Our company ethos is to organise tours for small groups and individuals so people can experience adventure responsibly. As a local, family-run business, we have built-up fantastic relationships with communities throughout Slovakia, and can provide the opportunity to connect with, and experience, local customs, culture and way of life first-hand.

During this tour, we will only use local services and, throughout the trip, we will stay in locally-owned accommodation, which supports small Slovakian businesses. We also recommend eating in local restaurants and mountain huts, so you can sample delicious local cuisine – we will make recommendations in your self-guided booklet so you know the best ones to choose.

On this vacation, we’ve also included a trek to many different mountain huts, including the oldest hut in the Tatra Mountains, Rainerova. Mountain huts have been part of the fabric of the Tatras’ for years; they’re traditional, welcoming and often have a historic story to tell. By visiting, we help to preserve their heritage for future generations.
