Heart of Patagonia itinerary is designed to guarantee a high commitment to sustainability and the preservation of the local environment and wildlife. There are several ways we ensure that we are only offering the most sustainable accommodation and tour options possible.

In Torres del Paine and El Calafate, our first-choice Hotel always meets high standards of sustainability and are recommended above the others due to their environmental responsibility practices. These practices include the use of clean, energy-efficient systems to reduce CO2, sustainable use of water and electricity, recycling management, the use of local and natural amenities, organic gardening, and composting initiatives. We verify all this through site visits and maintaining a close working relationship with our top hotels to ensure they continue to meet our standards and vice versa.

At El Calafate and El Chalten, the tour operations are also designed to reduce environmental impact by following stringent guidelines. Operating small-group tours, our guides are trained in “Leave No Trace” principles, we’ve eliminated single-use plastics and incorporated recycling practices and opportunities. These are just some of the ways we’re optimizing our itineraries to be even more sustainable and environmentally-friendly.

Our trips only offer eco-friendly and eco-tourism-oriented activities like hiking and walking, which have a low environmental impact and, thanks to our small-group size, reduces foot traffic.

People

In Torres del Paine, most Patagonia Camp staff are based locally, and this allows to experience a cultural exchange where people can learn and understand the local customs and history. Most of the decorations, crafts and souvenirs have been created by local artisans and small businesses.

We are careful to select and work with locally-owned and run hotels, as this also gives back to the community in a myriad of ways, such as hiring regional talent, honoring and highlighting local culture without appropriation, and supporting local artisans whose crafts and artwork are used as decoration throughout the hotel. If visits to such places are not directly included as part of the itinerary, we also encourage guests in their free time to visit and shop at local stores and restaurants to directly support small businesses.

We work continuously with our local partners to create and promote routes and activities that are off-the-beaten-path, opening up new, lesser-known destinations that reduce the pressure on high-traffic destinations, as well as visiting popular attractions at varying times or on alternating schedules from when most tour operators visit to reduce crowding and over-tourism.
