This is an overland tour in Mongolia, avoiding domestic flights. For the duration of this small group tour (max 12 people) we use a mini bus for transportation within the country.

Our ger camp hosts provide locally sourced, homecooked meals, including a nomadic feast of khorkhog, a dish of slow-cooked mutton and vegetables.


Environment & Wildlife

On this trip we visit and stay within a number of National Parks, where foot and paddle power allows us to venture further into the pristine landscapes. This includes a 2-3 hour river kayaking trip in the Terelj National Park.

Within the Hustai National Park, we stay at the Hustai ger camp which also houses a research center, built to aid the conservation of Prejewalski wild horses. The research and information center offers the opportunity to learn more about the breed of wild horses, which can be see roaming the national park. The Mongolian wild horse is a rare and endangered horse originally native to the steppes of Central Asia. Once extinct in the wild, it has been reintroduced to its native habitat since the 1990s.

Set right on the edge of Elsen Tasarkhai dunes, we stay in the Sweet Gobi ger camp. The environmental credentials of the ger camp include composting toilet facilities.

We actively promote the use of filtered water bottles to our clients to help reduce single-use plastic waste on our trips.

People

Local Economy

On this trip we spend seven nights’ accommodation in traditional ger camps, two of which are family run.

While staying with a family-run ger camp in the Orkhon valley, we have the opportunity to immerse ourselves in Mongolian life, learning how to put up a traditional Mongolian ger and how to make traditional Mongolian dumplings, to be enjoyed as part of an evening dinner.

We also have the chance to try our hands at herding and milking animals. For those more interested in traditional nomadic practices in the home, we are able to see how the family distil homemade vodka, make milk tea, dry curds, and make felt.

Supporting local enterprises, we visit a family who grow sea buckthorn and blueberries on a small commercial scale. We have the chance to walk around their plantation and sample the superfood berry in one of its many formats - most common is to have it as a hot reviving beverage.

While among the sand dunes at Elsen Tasarkhai, we visit a family of camel herders, and head off on a Bactrian camel ride across the dunes for a short ride enjoying the beautiful landscape surrounding us.
