Planet
ENVIRONMENT & WILDLIFEOn this trip we travel deep into the heart of the Greater Caucasus Mountains to the less-visited Tusheti region. Recognised as a protected landscape, the region is managed by the Tushetian people.
We also visit the Kazbegi National Park, where we cover just over 32 kms on foot over three walking days, including a trek to the village of Juta, which is cut off from the rest of the country for six months of the year.
CARBON REDUCTION
The Tushetian people live simply and very much off the grid, with the guesthouses we stay in while in the remote region, being run off solar panels.
Throughout Georgia the majority of food it locally sourced and seasonal, this is particularly true of the meals prepared by our guesthouse hosts and provides a provides good hearty sustenance for our days trekking in the mountains.
We spend four days enjoying the region on foot, covering approx. 45 kms on mountain hikes.
People
While in the Tusheti region, we have the opportunity the to enjoy local hospitality with out guesthouse hosts and sample typical home-made food of the region (including its famous cheese). This provides a rare opportunity to not only contribute directly to the preservation of this unique area, but also to experience village life first hand. This tour also supports a number of local producers.
In the Kakheti region, well-known for its wine producing and great views of the Caucasus mountains, we visit a local producer and can observe the traditions and culture of the region as well as taste the wines.
In the remote village of Juta, we visit a family that produces honey, and while in Telavi we support the farmers' market by purchasing food for picnic lunches. We also enjoy the fare of a number of local restaurants during the trip.
All guides and drivers on our Georgia trips are employed locally.
