CARBON REDUCTION

Efforts have been made to minimise flying by designing this itinerary around rail and sea travel. The journey begins with the Eurostar from London to France and continues by high speed rail within Europe, followed by an overnight ferry crossing to Algeria. This approach significantly reduces the need for short haul flights and lowers per person transport emissions compared with a fully flight based itinerary.

Shared local transport is used throughout the programme. Rail travel is utilised between Algiers and Oran, and private transfers are operated on a group basis rather than individual vehicles, helping to reduce emissions per traveler. The ferry crossing between Marseille and Algiers also carries both passengers and freight, improving overall transport efficiency.

Human powered exploration forms part of the experience. The guided walking tour in Marseille and walking visits in Algiers, Tipasa, the Casbah and Tlemcen all reduce reliance on vehicles while providing low impact ways to explore destinations.

Accommodation partners are selected with environmental performance in mind. The Sofitel properties in Marseille and Algiers and the Royal M Gallery in Oran are part of international hotel groups with established sustainability frameworks that typically include energy efficiency measures, water saving systems and waste reduction policies. Where renewable energy use is not fully confirmed, these properties implement operational measures to reduce their carbon footprint.

Vegetarian options are available daily through hotel breakfasts and included meals, and most restaurants visited offer plant based choices on request. Menus in both France and Algeria make strong use of seasonal produce, seafood and locally sourced ingredients, which reduces food miles and supports regional producers.

Travelers are encouraged in pre departure information to consider lower emission flight options to and from the tour, to travel light, and to bring reusable water bottles. Guidance on checking flight emissions through tools such as Google Flights or Skyscanner is also provided.

At present we do not formally measure Scope 1, 2 or 3 emissions for this specific itinerary, however this is under ongoing review as part of our wider sustainability strategy.

Accommodation providers used on this itinerary are vetted for their environmental practices. Partner hotels typically operate programmes covering water conservation, linen reuse, waste separation, and reduction of single use plastics. Large international properties such as the Sofitel hotels have group wide environmental standards and reporting, while the Royal M Gallery incorporates energy efficient lighting and water management systems. These policies are reviewed during supplier selection and contracting.

The programme includes visits to protected and heritage areas where entrance fees support conservation. These include the UNESCO listed site of Tipasa and the Jardin d’Essai botanical gardens in Algiers. Visitor fees contribute directly to site maintenance, landscape protection and heritage preservation.

Nature positive experiences are incorporated through guided visits to the Jardin d’Essai botanical gardens and coastal heritage areas around Tipasa, which promote awareness of Mediterranean ecosystems and historic landscape management. Use of licensed local guides ensures that visits follow site regulations and minimise visitor impact.

Clients receive pre departure guidance on responsible travel practices, including minimising plastic use, respecting wildlife and plant life, staying on marked paths, and following local conservation rules at archaeological and botanical sites.

Local expert guides accompany sightseeing throughout Algeria and France. These guides are licensed professionals from the local community with strong knowledge of cultural heritage and environmental sensitivities, helping ensure that visits are conducted responsibly and respectfully.

While invasive species are not currently identified as a major tourism related risk on this specific route, guides brief travelers to avoid transporting plant material or organic matter between sites and to respect local biosecurity guidance where applicable.

LOCAL ECONOMY

This itinerary supports local economies through a combination of locally delivered services and carefully selected suppliers. While the main hotels used in Marseille and Algiers are international branded properties, the programme makes strong use of locally owned businesses across Algeria. The Hotel Royal M Gallery in Oran is locally operated, and the majority of restaurants, transport providers and guiding services throughout Algeria are locally owned and managed.

Local professional guides are employed in both France and Algeria for all sightseeing days. In Algeria in particular, guiding, transport and on the ground coordination are handled by local partners, ensuring that a significant proportion of trip expenditure remains within the destination. Visits to the Casbah of Algiers, Tipasa, Tlemcen and local city districts naturally encourage spending at small cafes, local eateries and independent vendors.

The itinerary also creates economic benefit through the use of national rail services in Algeria and the Corsica Linea ferry, both of which support regional transport networks and employment. Time at leisure in Marseille, Algiers and Oran further encourages clients to dine independently and purchase local goods, spreading visitor spend beyond the formal tour inclusions.

EMPLOYMENT, INCLUSIVITY AND DIVERSITY

Our operating model prioritises local employment. Through our ground partners in Algeria and France, the vast majority of staff involved in delivering the tour, including guides, drivers and local representatives, are nationals of the country in which they work, with many drawn directly from the local communities visited.

The tour creates income opportunities for a wide range of local service providers, including independent guides, drivers, restaurant staff and site personnel at museums and heritage locations. In Algeria, tourism supports employment in areas where opportunities can be limited, and our partners actively recruit locally wherever possible. Female guides are used where available, particularly in urban centers, supporting greater participation of women in tourism.

We and our operating partners confirm that staff are paid at least the legal minimum wage in their respective countries and work under locally compliant employment conditions. Supplier selection includes consideration of fair pay and responsible employment practices.

Undiscovered Destinations maintains a clear equal opportunities approach and works only with partners that support non discriminatory employment practices regardless of gender, ethnicity or nationality. While local laws and cultural contexts vary, our expectation is that all travelers are treated with professionalism and respect throughout the journey.

Regarding LGBTQ+ travelers, the tour is fully inclusive in France. In Algeria, local laws and social attitudes are more conservative and same sex relationships are not legally recognised. Travelers are welcome on the tour, however discretion is advised in public spaces and we provide pre departure guidance so clients can make informed decisions.

In terms of accessibility, this itinerary involves walking tours, uneven historic surfaces in the Casbah and Tipasa, and some long travel days. As such, it is generally best suited to travelers with good mobility. Limited mobility arrangements may be possible on request, but the programme is not fully accessible for wheelchair users. Travelers with specific vision, hearing or cognitive requirements are encouraged to discuss needs in advance so we can assess possible adaptations.
