Vacation information
Small group tour, ideal for solos & couples:
Small group travel is not large group travel scaled down. It is modeled on independent travel – but with the advantage of a group leader to take care of the itinerary, accommodation and tickets, and help with the language. It’s easy to tick off the big sights independently – but finding those one-off experiences, local festivals, traveling markets and secret viewpoints is almost impossible for someone without the insider knowledge gained from years in the field. For those with limited time, a small group tour will save valuable time in planning, and on vacation.
Dietary requirements:
We can cater for vegetarian and vegan diets.

CARBON REDUCTIONDaynish Rock Bungalow has implemented several measures to reduce energy consumption and its carbon footprint:
Solar water heaters have been installed for all bathrooms. Solar street lighting is used around the property. All incandescent light bulbs have been replaced with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Guests are encouraged to switch off lights before leaving their rooms through reminder stickers. Bed sheets and towels are changed after the second day of a guest's stay unless a guest requests an earlier change, helping to reduce energy and water consumption associated with laundry.
Vegetarian food is widely available throughout Sri Lanka and can be provided during the itinerary. The itinerary includes hotel meals, packed/picnic lunches and village lunches, where vegetarian Sri Lankan dishes can generally be provided. Vegan meals can also be arranged with advance notice, subject to the individual accommodation or restaurant. We are confirming the specific vegan options with each accommodation provider to ensure that requirements can be communicated in advance.
The itinerary contains no domestic flights within Sri Lanka. The entire journey is operated using road transfers and walking/hiking. This avoids the additional carbon emissions associated with domestic air travel. The itinerary also incorporates extensive human-powered travel, with hiking forming the central activity of the trip. The group travels together using shared road transport for the main transfers between destinations. The wildlife safari is also undertaken in shared safari vehicles where applicable. Human-powered transport is the main form of travel during the itinerary. The trip includes approximately 10–11 days of hiking/walking, covering multiple stages of the Pekoe Trail.
ENVIRONMENT AND WILDLIFE
Daynish Rock Bungalow has implemented several measures to reduce its environmental impact:
Low-water-flush toilets have been introduced. Water levels in cisterns are optimised to reduce unnecessary water consumption. Guests are encouraged to conserve water through notices in bathrooms. Shampoo and conditioner are provided through refill systems, reducing single-use plastic packaging. Free drinking water is provided through refillable water dispensers rather than selling individual plastic water bottles. Glass soft-drink bottles have been introduced in place of plastic bottles. Food waste is composted and used as manure in the garden. Energy consumption is reduced through LED lighting, solar water heating and solar street lighting. Daynish Rock Bungalow uses composted food waste as natural manure for its garden, helping to return nutrients to the soil and reduce organic waste going to disposal.
The itinerary includes hiking through environmentally sensitive landscapes and includes Horton Plains National Park on Day 6, where the Pekoe Trail enters the Horton Plains area. The itinerary also passes through forest reserves and other sensitive natural environments. In addition, the official Pekoe Trail system requires hikers to obtain trail passes. The current official trail-pass information states that passes contribute towards trail maintenance, visitor services, local communities and environmental protection. The exact Horton Plains entrance/permit fee should be confirmed according to the applicable current foreign-visitor/group tariff at the time of operation.
The trip contributes to the conservation and sustainable management of the Pekoe Trail through the use of the official trail system and trail passes.
The Pekoe Trail Organisation is a Sri Lankan not-for-profit organisation responsible for maintaining and managing the trail. According to the organisation, trail-pass revenue supports:
Trail maintenance and restoration. Signage and visitor infrastructure. Visitor safety and services. Local communities, including guide networks and community vendors. Environmental protection and conservation projects. The trail passes through sensitive landscapes, tea estates, forests and local communities, and the organisation's stated objectives include conservation, biodiversity protection and minimising tourism impacts.

EMPLOYMENT DIVERSITY and INCLUSIVITY
The itinerary creates income opportunities for people living in rural communities in Sri Lanka's Central Highlands, particularly through local guiding, transport, accommodation, food services and community-based tourism. We do not currently have verified figures for the number of employees specifically belonging to marginalised groups, so no numerical claim is made here. The trip is operated on an inclusive basis and welcomes travelers regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. We aim to provide a respectful, safe and welcoming environment for all travelers and do not discriminate against LGBTQ+ customers. This is a challenging hiking itinerary and is not generally suitable for customers with significant mobility limitations.
