Multi activity vacations guide

While not suited to babies or toddlers, families with older children will have a blast on multi activity vacations and there are options to please kids from age five to 18.
The thought of spending your vacation trying out a host of new activities may sound a little daunting, especially if you’re not the sporty type. But you don’t have to be super fit or high achieving to participate. You just need to be willing to have a go at new things. And an ability to laugh at yourself wouldn’t go amiss either.

Family multi activity vacations are designed to be fun and adventurous, and you’ll find all kinds of enticing trips on offer, from kayaking and biking around Croatian islands to husky sledding and snowshoeing in Finland to wild swimming and horse riding in Slovakia. The opportunities are endless – and who knows, you might even discover a new passion along the way.

Small group family vacations are fantastic for parents – including single parents – who want their children to make new friends without being solely reliant on mum or dad. And most of our small group family multi activity vacations stay in a single base, which allows you to settle in and really get to know an area rather than packing up midway through your vacation.

What activities will we be doing?

However old your kids are, being able to swim or cycle is going to make a family multi activity vacation more enjoyable, though for kids between the ages of five and eight, things will be kept simple, and typical offerings include gentle hiking and biking or sharing a kayak with a parent. A tailor made adventure vacation for this age group usually works best, so that you can ensure your needs are met.

If your kids are 8 or older, things can get a bit more exciting, as they are able to go canyoning, coasteering and zip lining and can take control of their very own kayak. Teenagers, meanwhile, can challenge themselves with longer days and more intense activities, as well as with more adventurous destinations too, such as kayaking and snorkelling in the Galapagos or cycling and hiking in Madagascar.

When & where to go with kids

When the heat of European summer descends on the August school vacations, water based activities like kayaking, canoeing, wild swimming and canyoning will keep you cool. Outside of the summer vacations, May and June half terms find perfect conditions for rafting and tubing in Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro. October half term is a good time to hit southern and central Europe, with mild conditions that are perfect for hiking and biking; while Christmas and Easter vacations are gorgeous in Lapland for winter activities in the snow… and visiting Father Christmas.

Staying safe on a family multi activity vacation

The great thing about a family multi activity vacation is that it brings out the wild side of both kids and grownups. That’s not to say that health and safety rules should be thrown out of the window, though. Responsible family adventure vacation companies will always have procedures in place, use reputable, qualified guides and be able to answer all your safety concerns. Family multi activity vacations advice

Emma Heywood, owner and director at our supplier Undiscovered Montenegro:
“One of the reasons activity vacations appeal to families is that someone else is taking the lead for both the children and the parents. You can learn a lot from kids as they’re so adventurous and so much fun, and they tend to bring out the child in everyone.”

Ilaria Grieco from our supplier, eco hotel El Geco Verde:
“Most of our multi activity vacation guests are families and it's great to see them all getting on with each other, dining al fresco and letting the kids run wild for a bit. People often arrive wanting to cram in as much as possible but they usually end up cutting down on activities in favour of just relaxing and spending time with each other.”
