Indigenous peoples vacations

We’ve highlighted our vacations that work with and, vitally, benefit Indigenous Peoples. With these trips, we’re bringing into the foreground some of the world’s oldest societies, celebrating their traditional cultures and also the work they do to protect the land they have often inhabited for centuries. From homestays with local families to immersive cookery courses, and fascinating walking tours led by community leaders, our Indigenous Peoples vacations seek to discard outdated colonial narratives along with unhelpful stereotypes, instead allowing local people to decide on what stories they want to tell their visitors, and how they tell them.

There are two key reasons to go on our Indigenous Peoples vacations. Firstly, they give you a much more immersive take on the place you’re visiting, and ways of life there. These vacations purposefully slow things down and connect you with communities who will introduce you to aspects of their culture that most visitors to their country will likely miss. Examples might be attending small religious or cultural events with a local guide, or workshops where you can enjoy hands-on learning about handicrafts, cuisine or performance arts.

The second reason to take one of these trips is that they carry direct economic benefits for communities that are often marginalised or even ignored by more traditional forms of tourism. Our Indigenous Peoples vacations give hosts the agency to take tourism into their own hands. They decide on how they want the experience to operate, who they want to visit, and crucially, what to do with the profits. This is cultural tourism as it should be, on the host’s terms.
