It really is a case of sun, sand and sea when thinking about the best places to go on vacation in June. Small ship cruises explore the islands and coastline of Croatia, southern Europe welcomes hikers, kayakers and sailors, and the Baltics are significantly less, uh, Baltic. There are exceptions to the rule, of course: it’s bear watching season in Alaska and the Arctic.

Croatia is by far and away the star of the show when it comes to going on vacation in June. The rest of southern and central Europe isn’t far behind, including the defrosting (and up-and-coming) Baltic nations. June is the month where you can beat the midsummer rush on many things – whether that’s the Great Migration along the Mara River or Arctic cruises. It’s a good time for railway trips, too, as longer, clearer days mean excellent views. Longer days also equal more wildlife watching time in the chilly north – polar bears or whales, perhaps.

Africa

The Great Migration’s Mara River crossing starts now, so travel to Kenya or Tanzania and beat the summer vacation rush to witness this incredible spectacle.

The Americas & Caribbean

The Inca Trail is cool but clear and dry – and you’ll beat the school vacation rush for permits. It’s also drier and easier to see wildlife in the Peruvian Amazon. Summer solstice in Alaska can crack out almost 24 hours of sunlight – and with it comes the potential for long days of bear tracking. It’s also when tours into Denali National Park begin.

Asia

Borneo can be visited all year round, but this is the driest season, so the best time for visiting the rainforest and Mount Kinabalu. Although the monsoon rains hit Cambodia from June to October, they’re often short, sharp afternoon storms. If you’re traveling on a budget and looking to avoid the Angkor Wat crowds, then June can be a great month to travel. The stormy skies and green landscapes also make for some gorgeous photos. This is peak season for tiger safaris in India and Nepal. The climate is unpleasantly hot, so the tigers come out of hiding in search of water. Namibia and Botswana’s landscapes are still fresh from the rainy season, but you’ll have clear skies and plenty of wildlife. It’s chilly at night in the desert, though. June is a warm, dry time to explore the Silk Road, although it will be a tad busier too.

Europe

Beat the summer vacation rush by going on an Arctic cruise now. You’ll also enjoy 24-hour daylight around the summer solstice. Thanks to sunny weather and calm seas, it’s also a great time for a small ship cruise in Croatia or a gulet cruise. Croatia, Montenegro, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Turkey have excellent weather for cycling, hiking or water-based activities, and you’ll avoid the summer crowds. There’s 24-hour daylight in Iceland, and migrating whales can be seen in the surrounding waters. Warmer weather also means great conditions for hiking. Squeeze in a rail journey to Scotland while you’ve got long, light days and the promise of decent weather. You’ll also beat the school vacation travelers hunting out the Hogwarts Express experience on the West Highland Line. While southern Spain is hotting up, northern regions – including Catalonia, the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa – are gloriously warm and sunny without being unbearable. Conditions are ideal for walking, cycling and getting out on the water. Enjoy endless daylight in northern Sweden, Finland or Norway – ideal for walking, cycling, boating across lakes and kayaking. Where not to go on vacation in June

Southern Brazil will be very cold, but other regions are dry and pleasantly warm. Cuba is very wet, hot and humid, with the southeast being the worst affected. Morocco is just too hot to travel inland in June, or for activities like hiking, cycling and desert camping. Much of southern Patagonia becomes inaccessible and freezing, with few daylight hours. It’s cool and wet in South Africa’s Western Cape. This is the cyclone/monsoon season across mainland Southeast Asia and Nepal, causing travel disruption in most of the region – although you’ll get some cheap deals.
